Wool To Wishes

Five years later and we are still making our famous mittens under the name “Wool to Wishes”.  We now provide employment to 5 individuals, some of whom are employment challenged.  The mitten parties are still held and volunteers remain a large part of our social enterprise.  Only our mittens are sold at other stores but besides the mittens and pillows our line of merchandise has expanded to include leg warmers, texting mittens, baby hat and mitten sets, baby mittens, baby slippers, purses, boot cuffs and campfire capes.  To purchase these other items you are welcome to visit our store at 12 Church St., Port Elgin, NB or come to one of the many craft sales in which we participate.

Our newest addition to our Wool to Wishes Clothing Line.

Pedvac Foundation has been making and selling mittens for the past five years and is currently investigating beginning a social enterprise which will employ marginalized individuals to make their products with any profit going to Pedvac.

Mittens3The beautiful hand crafted mittens have been made since 2005. Now the women are making pillows with preowned woolen blankets and the scraps leftover from mitten making. The pillows are even stuffed with the leftovers. They are cut and sewn by local women from the Port Elgin region who gather in the sunny PEDVAC office. With the clatter of sewing machines in the background the women work, share a cup of coffee and talk. The wool material is selected from the second hand sweater at the PEDVAC boutique.Mittens2
Mittens 4The volunteers give their time and effort to show their support for the community. But while the women sew and give to the community, they too are receiving something – they are getting a break from their own work, meeting others from the community, and feeling that they are part of something good and important. With much laughter and conversation the women sip coffee, cut and sew. Mittens5
Pillows 1What is it like to foster a child? What can we do to save the earth? Why do we eat squares when we are trying to lose weight? The conversation is different than in earlier times but the mood is the same. We hope you stop in and check out the style of our pillows and the warmth of our mittens as you think of the joyful gathering that made them as well as the widespread good that the proceeds from your purchase will do throughout the region in the many social service programs PEDVAC fosters throughout the region.House Pillow
The mittens are made from recycled materials which are donated to the Community Boutique. The outer shell of the mittens is made from woolen sweaters which are felted, cut, and sewn into the pattern. The lining of the mittens is made from pre-used fleece. The cushions and mittens are available to purchase at Pedvac’s craft store; The Craft Gallary in Sackville, New Brunswick; Keepsake Crafts in Murray Corner, New Brunswick; Cape Jourimaine (the eco tourism centre near the bridge to Prince Edward Island); Lismore Farm Wool Shop in River John, Nova Scotia; and at various craft shows in which Pedvac participates.
